70 days 4 Peace Vigil
May 28, 2015 @ 7:00 pm - August 5, 2015 @ 7:15 pm
Be a Witness for Peace: May 28- August 5
70 days 4 Peace is a vigil to be held on the University Lutheran Church stoop, 66 Winthrop St, Cambridge, MA during the 70 days leading up to the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima.
The time: 7:00 pm-7:16 pm every evening because at 8:16 am Japan time/ 7:16 pm Eastern Time was the time the bomb was dropped. Plan to participate!
What happens at the vigil: At 7 pm words of welcome and purpose are spoken. Those gathered are invited to participate as the spirit moves them, including lighting candles or writing a few words of prayer, lament or hope on a peace crane or dove which will be hung on a branch of the magnolia tree. At 7:15 pm a gong signals a minute of silence and then close the vigil at 7:16 pm.
Operation: -One person (at least)each evening will be the Welcomer who brings out the supplies of candles, cranes, doves and sharpies to write prayers on the cranes/doves.
-One captain of the week insures all days are covered with the Welcomers and sees that materials are in good supply. A captain need not attend every night that week.
The above does not represent the limits of the vigil. There is lots of room for the Spirit to work creatively. There is lots of opportunity for partnering with other groups, religious and secular. One hope is that more vigils and other actions will spring up elsewhere.
